Now what you know what capitalization is, but do you know when to use them?
Well you've got to use them in many different ways from; the first word in a sentence, proper nouns, brand names, companies, governmental matters, etc.
I'm going to tell you how to use them in names, directions, and titles.
When you spell a person's name, it has to have a capital first letter.
Examples: Isaac, John, Chase
Directions
You've got to use capitals in the use of directions. Some sentences don't use directions with capital letters. I can't really explain it so let me show you. Examples: I live in West Ham. I can see a polar bear here in the North Pole. I went fishing in the South Pole. North Gwinnett Middle School
What not to do: Go North all the way to Georgia. Turn Left to go to Papa John's. The pizza parlor is all the way West of the Pizza Palace.
Title When writing the title of something, you must always capitalize the main words unlike the, of, or and unless if it's at the beginning of the title like you would do at the beginning of a sentence. Example: The Maze Runner Diary of a Wimpy Kid Great Expectations
There are many rules to capitalization besides these three rules up top. Most of these rules are:
- The first word of a sentence (My name is Jin. She went to the coffee shop. People like movies.)
- Names of relatives (to indicate family relationship) (Uncle John, Aunt Amy, Uncle Bill)
- Names of relatives when used as proper name (Talk to Mom. She told Father. Jean spoke to Grandpa after dinner)
- Titles that precede a name (Governor Barnes, President Washington, Senator Jones)
- High ranking officials (President of the United States, Senator of State, State Congressman)
- Religious names (Buddha, Jesus, Allah)
- Days of the week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday)
- Months (December, October, January)
- Holidays (Christmas, Easter, Hanukkah)
- Seasons when used in a title (Spring semester, 2009 Winter Festival, 2011 Fall Festival)
- Periods and events (Stone Age, Victorian Era, Renaissance Period)
- Country or ethnicity (Japan, Asian, Indian)
- Names of national, political, racial, social, civic, and athletic groups (Atlanta Braves, House of Representatives, Chamber of Commerce)
- Trademarks (Pepsi, Cola, Apple)
- The first word used in a direct quote (She said to Tia, "We will have a sleepover." John said to Mark, "What's up?" The cello yelled to the violin, "We have strings!")
- The first word after a colon (Bill failed math; He didn't study at all. Bill's lateness to the meeting made no difference; He had nothing important to add. The social studies students ate pizza; The other students were jealous.)
- Salutations and closings of letters (Dear John, From, Love)
- Initials and acronyms (F.D.R, FBI, John F. Kennedy)
- Planets (Venus, Earth, Mars)
