Now that Savannah had been established, Oglethorpe allowed many people form many different countries to settle in Georgia. There were two important groups that had settled there though. The first were the Salzburgers and the second was the Highland Scots. There were also some times during the trustee period that had forged a very angry group that opposed the trustees, but I'll have to explain the Salzburgers and the Highland Scots first.
The Salzburgers were German speaking Protestans that had come to Georgia from the city of Salzburg. Salzburg is now located in present day Austria. Now the Salzburgers didn't come to Georgia just because they wanted to. They came because they were kicked out of there homes and were in search of new ones. Why were they kicked out? Well it was because they were Protestant. There are 2 types of Chrisitanity, Catholic and Protestant. The Catholics and the Protestant people didn't like each other and that was why they came here to Georgia. Once they got there, they were happy with their lives and new homes and obeyed all of the regulations from the British people. They were successfully able to build a town and they worked hard because they did not need the use of slaves. Oglethorpe wanted these actions to be examples of what his colonists should do. The Salzburgers had to build a new town because the place they tried to grow their food was very murky, so they had to go north. The Salzburgers tried to live happy here, but their lack of food and the spread of disease had killed most of them and so it was not very happy for these people.
Now Georgia was supposed to serve as a buffer to slow the Spanish down from invading South Carolina, but what was a defense without any defense? That's why the Highland Scots were brought in. These Scottish warriors were very well-known for protecting and being fierce. They gladly helped protect Georgia from the Spanish on the southern border of Georgia. There, they founded the town/fort of Darien. Now the Highland Scots very well protected the settlement of Georgia and had even won the Battle of Bloody Marsh for the British by launching a sneak attack on the Spanish. The Spanish became frightened becaue they thought that the British had more soldiers and gave up on trying to invade Georgia. These men knew what they did and they did very well on defense.
During the time that the Highland Scots were around, Britain and Spain had engaged in a war known as the War of Jenkins' Ear. The war got its name when a Brtish cargo ship accidently slipped into Spanish waters near La Florida. The ship was attacked and the captain's (Robert Jenkins) was cut off by one of the Spanish. This angered the Britsh and so the war began. James Oglethorpe himself was involved and he tried to capture the fort of the Spanish capital of St. Augustine. He failed and the Spanish came to invade Georgia near St. Simons' Island. This time, he was victorious but was called by the king to return to England at once to press charges against his failed attack on St. Augustine.
During the entire trustee period, there were these group of people that didn't like the rules of the trustees. These people were called the malcontents. Their name literally means not content. These people complained a lot about the regulations on slaves, rum, land ownership, etc. and made many protests against the trustess about this. When Oglethorpe left to press chrages for his attack on St. Augustine, the Georgia colony went into chaos. The trustees could no longer handle all of this and returned the charter to the king 1 year before it had expired.
