James Edward Oglethorpe was born on December 22, 1696. He was the tenth and last child of Eleanor and Theophilus Oglethorpe. In his early years, Oglethorpe was a rich boy and he lived quite comfortably due to his father's richness. Eleanor and Theophilius Oglethorpe were interested in politics and one day in 1698, Theophilius Oglethorpe was elected into the House of Commons. He said that when he dies, his 3 sons would take his place in the House. Many years pass by and Oglethorpe is accepted into the Corpus Christi College in Oxford. Due to the European defense rise against the Turks, Oglethorpe was forced to drop college for a while and join a military academy in France. After the little skirmish, he went to Austria to aide Prince Eugene of Savoy in a victorious campaign. After all those exciting adventures, Oglethorpe returned to Corpus Christi where he never graduated, but got a special M.I. in 1731. One year later, Oglethorpe decides to make a settlement in Georgia for the working poor of England. After many attempts to tell King George II, he finally got his wish of being able to create his settlement. So the interviews for bakers, tailors, carpenters, etc. went on until the fated day for the expedition to Georgia. Oglethorpe took a ship of men, women, and children on The Anne to Georgia to make his first settlement there. After a two month long journey, Oglethorpe reached Georgia and began to rest on the first day. While the others were resting, he went to the Savannah River and saw the Yamacraw chief, Tomochichi and thus a long relationship began. After the little chat with Mary Musgrove as the translator, Oglethorpe came back to the colonists and some of the Yamacraws. With their help, all of the pinewood forests were cleared and the construction of the city of Savannah began. Tomochichi allowed them to settle on the mouth of the Savannah River. Tomochichi allowed this because he was such good friends with Oglethorpe and also did it for trading opportunities. As the city progressed, Oglethorpe made many difficult decisions for the people, like allowing religious minorities to settle here in Georgia, and got to be the military leader there. There were also some hardships that ca, along to the settlers, but I will explain that in the Trustee Period Tab. He went on to conquer other territories for England and many failed to win and many successfully got them some land. One of these battles was called the Battle of Bloody March. More of this will be explained in the Trustee Period section. He later returned to England after another failed attempt to capture a Spanish fortress. He served the government and met with the first U.S. ambassador John Adams before his death on June 30, 1785.
