So why did Oglethorpe and King George II want a colony in Georgia? Well, Oglethorpe wanted to create a settlement in Georgia that would let debtors and other poor British men to reclaim themselves and start a new life. The debtors were to work to repay their debts and the poor people were to work so that they may be able to earn a little bit a cash for their families. Unfortunately, mainly artisans went to Georgia because many people would not let the prsioners in a debtor's prison go unless they repayed their debts. King George, on the other hand, had different purposes for the new settlement. These reasons were charity, economics, and defense.
The first reason for, charity, was pretty much explained in the first paragraph above. King George wanted to empty his prisons and let the prisoners start fresh in this new settlement. Plus all of his prisons were getting quite full. The settlers were to work until they had enough money to pay off their debts or to have enough money so that the families that lived there could buy enough food or water. The second reason, economics, is a very simple concept to explain. South Carolina was a very prosperous state because it grew a ton of cash crops. The cash crops would then be sent back to the king and voila, Great Britain is rich. So King George II wanted Georgia to be a second South Carolina so that his nation could become richer than ever. Finally, we have defense. The Spanish had taken La Florida and had settle there, but the British had a great economic success in South Carolina. The British were worried that the Spanish would invade South Carolina for the resources. So King George II proposed that Georgia would serve as a buffer to slow down the Spanish until reinforcements had arrived to save the day.
