Can you guess what this region is? Hint: I live here. You got it! This is the Piedmont region, home to more than half of Georgia's population and is the heart of Georgia. The picture above shows that capital city Atlanta. The Piedmont region is known for containing most of Georgia's most populated cities. Filled with gently rolling hills, Georgia's land is suitable for agriculture, hardwood timber, and pine. The land here was once inhabited by the Mississippian natives and then was taken by force by the Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto. Once European settlers came in, they saw how rich the soil was for agricultural purposes and thus the settlements began. Many crops began to grow and hogs were bred here for food. Georgia used to have tall oak and hickory trees that replaced what have today. The remaining trees remain in Fernbank Forest.
